THE BIT TO REMEMBER
Check the power and selected address first. Record what happens before changing settings.
First, switch off if something is wrong
Stop if the controller reports a short, or the model is unusually hot, smells hot or makes a new grinding noise. Do not keep increasing the speed to force it to move.
Check the obvious controls
Confirm track power is enabled and emergency stop is released. Select the known address. On a suitable test track, compare with a known-working model compatible with the same control system.
Look for a repeatable pattern
Does it stop at one location? Do other models stop there? Does it only fail in one direction? Inspect track connections and visible dirt, following the model and track cleaning instructions.
Know when to use the workshop
Persistent poor running, damaged wiring, binding mechanisms and uncertain decoder installations deserve inspection. Basic checks cannot confirm the faulty part. Bring a short video and your observations.
A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
If a known-working compatible locomotive runs on the same track but this one does not, record that. Also note whether lights or sound work, and whether the problem happens in both directions.
Your next step
- Note whether one model or the whole railway is affected.
- Check track power, emergency stop and the known address.
- Record lights, sound, direction and where it stops.
- Add a fault record and book an inspection if needed.
