DC or DCC? Start here.

Both systems can run a model railway. DCC gives each fitted locomotive its own digital instructions; DC controls it through the track supply.

THE BIT TO REMEMBER

DC controls the track supply. DCC sends commands to a decoder in the locomotive.

What you already have may be enough

If your DC railway does what you want, you do not have to convert it. DCC becomes useful when you want independent locomotive control and supported lighting or sound functions.

What changes with DCC?

A command station sends digital instructions through the rails. A decoder receives them inside each locomotive. You select an address on the controller, then change speed, direction or functions.

Sound is a separate choice

A motor decoder does not necessarily play sounds. A sound installation needs sound-capable hardware, a compatible speaker and the appropriate sounds for your model.

A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

With DCC, you can leave one locomotive waiting at a platform while another moves on the same powered track. Select the second locomotive’s address to control it.

Your next step

  1. Find the name of your current controller.
  2. Check whether each model is DC, DCC Ready or DCC Fitted.
  3. Decide what you want to do that your current setup cannot.
