THE BIT TO REMEMBER
On DC, the controller changes the track voltage and polarity to control speed and direction.
Start with matched equipment
Use a controller and power supply intended for your scale and railway. Connect its track output exactly as the manufacturer describes. Do not open a controller or mains power supply.
The rails complete the circuit
A two-rail locomotive collects electricity from both rails. Dirt, loose rail joiners or poor wheel contact can interrupt that path. A metal object across both rails can cause a short circuit.
One controller controls its powered section
Locomotives on the same powered DC section respond together. Points and isolated sections can be used to park a locomotive without powering it, depending on the track design.
A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
Turn the controller gently from zero and the locomotive should begin to move. Reverse direction only after it has stopped, following the controller instructions.
Your next step
- Read the controller instructions before connecting it.
- Use a simple, clean test track with one locomotive.
- Turn the control up gently and test both directions.
- Stop if the model becomes hot, smells hot or makes a new grinding noise.
