Your first DCC locomotive

Start small: one suitable locomotive, your controller instructions and a simple test track. Learn to run it before changing lots of settings.

THE BIT TO REMEMBER

DCC Ready means ready for a decoder to be fitted. It does not mean one is already inside.

Read the label first

DCC Ready normally describes a DC model with provision for a decoder. DCC Fitted means a decoder is installed. DCC Sound describes a sound installation. Check the exact product number and instructions.

Match the hardware

You need a compatible DCC controller, its specified power supply and a decoder-fitted locomotive. For an unfitted model, check the interface, available space and motor requirements before choosing a decoder.

Keep the first test simple

Follow the controller’s instructions to connect an isolated test track and select the model’s documented address. Try a slow movement in each direction. If the controller reports a short, switch off and check before trying again.

A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

An OO model marked DCC Ready with an 8-pin socket still needs a suitable decoder. An otherwise identical DCC Fitted release already has one installed.

Your next step

  1. Check the model’s exact instructions and decoder status.
  2. Use the controller’s specified supply and track connection.
  3. Select the documented address and test one model.
  4. Record the working address and decoder details in My Collection.
